World of Tanks (WoT) is a multiplayer online tank game developed by Wargaming. It features tanks and other combat vehicles from the Second World War period to the early Cold War period. A total of six hundred armoured vehicles, from Britain, China, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, the Soviet Union, Sweden and the United States are featured in the game. Players are also given the option to choose between light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks, tank destroyers, self-propelled guns and some main battle tanks. Despite starting life as a PC game, World of Tanks is also available on Playstation 4 and Xbox 360. The Xbox One version of the game is called World of Tanks Valor. Furthermore, it is available as a mobile app under the name World of Tanks Blitz. A board game called World of Tanks Rush is inspired by the game and has proved to be quite popular.
Conceptual development for World of Tanks began in late 2008 and was officially announced by the developers in 2009. After alpha testing in 2009 and beta testing in 2010, the game featured more than 60 different tanks and armoured combat vehicles. Since its official release in 2011, the game has proven incredibly popular and offers a broad range of features. Features include various battle formats, such as random battles, team-training battles, tank-company battles, stronghold battles and special battles. All tanks and armoured vehicles in the game can be customised to some degree. World of Tanks offers the option to upgrade tracks, guns, turrets and engines on all tanks.
World of Tanks is a fan favourite and ranks highly on PC tank games rankings. It has won several Golden Joystick Awards, as well as other accolades. PC Gamer has rated the game 85%, while other publications such as GamesMaster, GameSpot and Common Sense Media have all held the game in high regard.
